Local team has a photographer, but asked if I would help him out. I know jack about Roller Derby, but told them I'd give it a go. I went to a couple of their practices, but yesterday they had a scrimmage. My "action" shots were nothing to write home about IMO, but some of the more candid ones I'm pleased with.

Mark, I think this is a great series! You caught some excellent expressions on the individual faces and some good action shots!

My favourite is the black and white - though I think it'd be better if the bottle were removed from the left, either by cropping or cloning - or a combination of both.

Thanks for the comments. I would agree with Dave that the B&W is also my favourite. I've only got Lightroom and Gimp, and I hardly know how to use GIMP, so I don't know that I'd be able to remove that bottle without making look like it was removed. I could crop mind you as you've noted.

what a fun series to view, great shots and I too remember Dick Lane way back in the day, anyone else remember the sport from Los Angeles on KTTV. Thanks for the memories.

Glad you enjoyed them Bob. I expect I'll be shooting more of these events, so keep an eye open.

I've used Gimp. Most of what is needed is there but I've always found it a bit of a fight to get what I want from it. I haven't really used Lightroom of late. I had an early version, but it wouldn't upgrade to cope with some of the latest RAW files. I do have Photoshop CS5 though - I got a legal version pretty cheap.

I do have Photoshop Elements as well. Much of what is in the full photoshop is there - but, infuriatingly, much of it is in a different place to where it is in Photoshop itself. For its price it's not bad at all.

As Sparkie has done, I did remove the offending bottle earlier.

Dave LR4 is the way to go. If you take an image you processed in LR3 into LR4 and convert it you will see a big difference.

Thanks again for the comments. If you've removed the bottle, go ahead and post. I'd like to see the finished product.

Here is the B&W image with the water bottle removed. I used content aware in CS6 to remove the bottle. I didn't make any other adjustments to the image. I just think a tighter crop would work better now that the bottle is removed.

Here is the cropped image. I added some room on the top of the image to get a 8x10 crop.

Looks good without the bottle. 8x10 crop also works, but you've got me stumped, how did you add to the top of the image? Is that a "content aware" trick?

Content aware is a feature in Photoshop. To add to the top of the image I just copied and pasted a section from the top of your image.

Nice series, Mark. I too like the B&W and the first action shot.
