Nikon D5200 AnnouncedOn November 6th, Nikon finally announced the D5200 DSLR, which will soon be replacing the Nikon D5100 as their premium intro-level DSLR offering.  We recently compared the D5100 to the Pentax K-30 and Canon Rebel T4i and found that it held its ground very well, which means that the D5200 can only do better!

The D5200 retains most of the D5100's look and feel while boasting upgraded internals, including a new 24.1-megapixel sensor, EXPEED3 image processor, and full-HD video at 50/60 FPS.  The D5200 also inherits the 39-point Multi-CAM4800DX autofocus system from the D7000.  These improvements are bound to make the D5200 very competitive within its class, as no other upper entry-level DSLR boasts the same resolution or such an advanced autofocus system.  Nikon's choice to re-use components from their higher-end DSLRs is certainly a smart one, we believe!

Read on for a quick comparison of the specifications of the two cameras!

New Stabilized Canon Lenses: 24-70mm F4, 35mm F2Minutes ago, Canon announced two new exciting additions to their EF DSLR lens lineup: the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Zoom Lens and the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens.

The compact 24-70mm F4 lens is a lighter and more affordable alternative to the 28-70mm F2.8L II USM lens and is designed for full-frame and APS-C shooters alike. On full-frame cameras, it's a very handy walkaround zoom corresponding roughly to an 18-55mm kit lens on APS-C, but offering premium image quality.  Canon recommends this lens for those starting out with the recently-announced Canon 6D.  The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm and has a 9-blade circular aperture to deliver smooth bokeh.  It's complete with image stabilization, silent autofocus, and allows full-time manual focus adjustments.  The lens is less than 10cm long and will launch in December at a price of $1499.

Canon 35mm F2

The EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens succeeds Canon's EF 35mm F2 lens, and is another compact addition to their lens lineup.  The lens features advanced lens coatings, image stabilization, and fast ultrasonic autofocus, and lets you manually focus at any time if you wish to do so.  This lens will also be launching in December for $849.

Canon boasts that both of these lenses feature their latest AF technology, and that the new 35mm will focus much faster and quieter than its predecessor.

Nikon Launches an Andriod-Powered S800c CameraToday, Nikon announced an industry first: the new Coolpix S800c, which is the first digital camera to be powered by Google Android (or any smartphone operating system for that matter).  Although this new camera looks just like an ordinary point-and-shoot, the fact that it's powered by Android packs it with a host of features that no camera has had before.

Thanks to its built-in WiFi and GPS, you can even go online with the camera and take full advantage of just about any app available through Google Play.  There are apps out there that will let you e-mail posts, wirelessly transfer them to a PC, or even edit them in-camera!

Canon Rebel T4i and 40mm Pancake Lens LaunchedCanon's new Rebel T4i DSLR- the most advanced Rebel to date- has just been launched! In addition, the new Canon 40mm F2.8 STM "pancake" lens has also just become available for $199.  This new pancake lens is a first for Canon, and we think it was inspired by Pentax's lineup of Limited lenses.  Read more about this 40mm pancake on PentaxForums.com.

Canon 40mm F2.8

The new Rebel features an articulating LCD screen and has the following specifications:

  • 18-megapixel APS-C sensor
  • ISO 100-12800 expandable to 25600
  • 5FPS continuous shooting
  • Improved 9-point autofocus
  • 1080p/30, 720p/60/50 HD video recording
  • 3-inch LCD with over 1,000,000 dots (just above VGA)

The T4i is launching at a price of $849 and is now available for pre-order.  The new Rebel will also be available in kits with the Canon 18-55mm and 18-135mm STM for $949 and $1199, respectively.  These prices are very similar to those of the new Pentax K-30, although the Pentax seems to have a slight edge in terms of specifications, and it is weather-sealed as well.  While the new Rebel certainly looks good on paper, it doesn't look like there's much innovation surrounding it- it's just an upgraded body.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100: A High-End CompactSony has just rolled out an impressive new compact camera called the Cyber-Shot RX-100, which features a large 20.2 megapixel sensor and a fast F1.8 lens with 3.6x zoom.  The sensor is much bigger physically than those typically found in point-and-shoot cameras: it measures 1 inch across the diagonal, while other point-and-shoot sensors are normally in the 1/2-1/8th inch range.  The sensor is in fact almost as large as APS-C.  Its larger size means that it will deliver clearer photos with less noise (it can also go up to ISO 6400), and this also allows the sensor to have an increased resolution.  On top of all this, the RX-100 will be able to shoot full-HD video clips at 60FPS, and it has a clear 3-inch LCD on the back with 1,229 thousand dots (about 25% more pixels than VGA).  To finish things off, the camera has a metal body and the latest in Sony's in-camera functionality.  Sony boasts AF speeds as low as 0.13 seconds and burst shooting as high as 10FPS.

As great as these specifications may seem, that makes this camera a gem is the degree of manual control that it will offer.  It features the 4 basic shooting modes (P/A/S/M) in addition to your typical scene modes, allowing you to manually control any aspect of the exposure if you so desire.  This level of flexibility is rare in cameras this small, but it makes them an even bigger pleasure to use!
